Happy Summer, Everyone!
It is officially summer now, not that the 90 degree weather a couple weeks ago wasn’t indication enough. The season of ice cream, lake trips, and long nights with friends is finally upon us. I’ll try to not bring you down too much with my extreme dislike of heat, but if you need me, I’ll be hibernating in the only room in our house that has air conditioning.
I know it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from me, but I’ve got big news. I quit my third shift job! To recap, I used to work part-time third shift and part time first shift, and it was awful. I did that for the past six years and let me tell you, my sleep schedule is so confused. Last night was my first Thursday night where I could go to bed at 10:30 pm instead of get ready for work. It was amazing! Which is also why I’m here writing this at 5:30 am because I’m wide awake wondering why I’m not at work. Ha.
It will take some getting used to, but this is going to free up so much mental strength and ability. Most of my days for the past six years were spent enduring the sleep deprivation headaches and forcing myself to get something, anything accomplished. Then when I would succumb to the lack of sleep and related headaches, I would spend the next few days hating myself for it.
I don’t expect to adjust back to “normal” overnight, but I am super excited about it. I figure I’ll give myself a few weeks grace, and then really dive head first into this new freedom. I do plan to pick up an extra day at my first shift job, but other than that, I’ve finally got the time *and* the mental clarity to focus on things that I want to do.
First order of business is to set up a good routine for my days. Before I even gave my notice at my other job, I had made out a list of goals and hopes for the next six months. That being done, it’s time to get down to business and make them a reality. One of my biggest goals is to ultimately be more present here, but I’m going to take that kind of slow and start with journaling. Starting incredibly small, I’ve picked up the Five Minute Journal and will make it my first goal to write in that every day. After that, I’m going to be embracing the Steal Like an Artist journal. I’ve almost finished Kleon’s book of the same name, so it’ll be good to start acting on those words.
What this means for all of you is that I’m hoping to be around more. I’m planning to make this much more than a personal diary, which I admit it’s been more of lately. There will be growing pains here and off the screen as I adjust to this new plan, but I’m excited. I hope you’ll stick around for the ride.
But first things first, is 6 am too early for ice cream??
